Reco-reco

The reco-reco is a popular instrument of great simplicity, which exists in different cultures of the globe. In Portugal it is mainly used in the north, in the Minho region.

It is a traditional Idiophone rubbed with various shapes, consisting of a cogged stick (or cane), with about 70cm long, on which one can scrub in the desired rhythm, with a thinner wooden stick and thus have a signature tone. In Portugal it is used in traditional singing groups, folk dancing and in the singing groups of “Janeiras”, which are sung by groups of people who all through January go door to door and sing traditional songs, with the simple purpose of greeting their neighbours and wishing them a wealthy and happy new year. These can also be called “Cantares dos Reis” King Songs”, but these latter are only sung from the 25th December to the 6th January and represent the moment when the “Holly Kings” arrived to Bethlehem to incense and myrrh.
